The Siberian tiger requires a very large territory, anywhere from 1,200 to 1,600 square miles per animal. It lives at high altitudes in mixed deciduous and conifer forests. HABITAT: Its historic range, which included China and Korea, has been reduced to the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in southeastern Siberia. SIZE: Adults average between 400 and 675 pounds in weight and measure between 9 and 11 feet from head to rump. It catches large prey by striking the neck, dragging the animal down with its massive jaws and forelimbs, then suffocating it. An ambush predator, it hunts prey like wild boar and elk from the dense cover of forest growth. It develops an extra layer of fat, and a longer, thicker coat in winter to keep it warm.
